The New Apprenticeship Standards Will Change Lives
For young people nearing the end of their education and seeking employment, or existing employees wanting to improve competencies and prospects, apprenticeships offer the ideal opportunity to develop new skills, earn a good wage and progress in a chosen career.
Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom learning, providing participants with the skills required for career development, whilst acquiring nationally recognised qualifications. As a government funded work-based training provision for people aged 16 years and over, apprenticeships offer employers an effective way to build a skilled, motivated and flexible workforce.
Employers are responsible for paying apprentices but government funding is available to cover some if not all training costs. The content of the training programme is determined by the employer, giving them the control to develop their workforce as required. Employers can offer apprenticeships to both new starters and existing employees, and courses can be tailored to suit a specific job role.

There are currently two types of apprenticeships available; the new apprenticeship standard and the existing apprenticeship framework. Apprenticeship Frameworks are work-related vocational and/or professional qualifications with ongoing or continuous assessments. In 2012, the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills deemed the frameworks to be unfit for industry employers. As a result, the employers are now able to design apprenticeships and decide how the funding is allocated to this type of training.
The new Apprenticeship Standards are developed by employers for employers. Each standard relates to a specific job role and sets out the core skills, knowledge and behaviours an apprentice will require to be fully competent in their job role. An End-Point Assessment (EPA) is used, which separates the training delivery and assessment process, enabling employers to focus on training and learning. This method allows the apprentice to gain the maximum possible experience prior to assessment. Frameworks will be phased out by 2020 as the government moves to the employer-led standards.
