kickstart2employment Pioneers Rehabilitation Programme For Serving Prisoners

kickstart2employment has partnered with HMP Peterborough to trial an LGV Distance Driving Course that promotes rehabilitation amongst serving prisoners and reduces the risk of reoffending.
Due to the shortage of LGV drivers in the UK, kickstart2employment has developed an effective distance learning resource that introduces learners to the transport and logistics industry. This bespoke course has been piloted within HMP Peterborough, a privately-operated prison that houses both male and female prisoners. The course has been delivered via distance learning modules to serving prisoners, giving them the skills, knowledge and motivation to pursue a successful career in the industry upon release. The purpose of the course is to reduce reoffending rates and provide an effective route to rehabilitation. This project was funded by kickstart2employment and its parent company, GAP Personnel.
The distance learning course was launched on 31st January 2018 and offered to male and female residents who had six months or more left to serve, held a current driving licence and a Level 1 or above in English and Maths. Interest in this course was particularly high and, from a large pool of potential candidates, twelve males and six females were selected to participate in the trial.
Trainers from kickstart2employment visited HMP Peterborough to launch the programme. Course materials were provided and the candidates were given a comprehensive insight into the opportunities available to them should they choose to progress in a career in transport and logistics.
HMP Peterborough actively supported the programme, providing access to several copies of the Highway Code and Driving Standards Manuals through the prison library service. Candidates completed the course workbooks and returned them to k2e in a timely manner.
On 20th March 2018, k2e trainers returned to HMP Peterborough to deliver marked workbooks and provide constructive feedback to all candidates. Support and guidance was given regarding ongoing modules and course content.
Other than four candidates who were transferred or discharged before the end of the trial, all participants successfully completed the programme and achieved excellent pass rates. On completion, one candidate said:
“This course not only refreshed my basic driving knowledge but it also introduced me to new areas of knowledge that I can use to gain employment.”
Associates at HMP Peterborough have since commented that the programme was comprehensive and well received. Paul Stacey, an Employability Tutor at HMP Peterborough, said:
“The candidates enjoyed completing the modules and I have since received interest from many other residents who wish to enrol on the next cohort. The candidates who successfully completed this programme are keen to complete follow-up courses, particularly if they can achieve a formal qualification in this subject area. kickstart2employment has provided candidates with a realistic and achievable route to attaining sustainable employment on release and therefore reducing the risk of reoffending."
